Logging in to ACS and Starting Pine
  1. On any computer with Telnet or SSH software, open the host acs.bu.edu.
  2. If you are not sure whether you have Telnet or SSH software, or if you have never used it, please see the additional information at www.bu.edu/pcsc/email/remote/locatingtelnet.html
  3. When prompted, enter your login name and password.
  4. After logging in, you may be asked to give the terminal type. Type vt100 and press Enter to proceed.
  5. Next you may be asked whether or not you want to see some system messages. You can press y, n or q as appropriate.
  6. After that, you may be asked if you want to 'read messages posted by the community'. You can press y or n as appropriate.
  7. Then at the %, type pine and press Enter.
Navigating within Pine
  1. The first screen you see in Pine contains a list of your messages.
  2. Use the arrow keys to move up and down the list, and press Enter to view a message.
Deleting a Message
  1. When you see a message you would like to delete, press d.
  2. This marks the message as deleted, but will not delete it until you quit Pine, or you type x to Expunge your mailbox (the Expunge command removes all deleted messages from your mailbox).
  3. If you change your mind and don't want to delete the message, enter the u key command to Undelete it.
  4. Be aware that if you do quit Pine and/or expunge your messages, they are gone for good.
Quitting from Pine
  1. To quit Pine, type q.
  2. Pine will ask if you really want to quit. Type y for yes.
  3. Pine may now ask you if messages you've read should be saved to your "received" folder. If you normally use SilkyMail or a personal computer mail program configured to use IMAP, you can type y to this. This will store the mail you just read in a folder in your private home directory on ACS, rather than leaving it in the common disk area. The "received" folder will be visible from SilkyMail and any other mail program configured to use IMAP.
  4. (If you usually use a mail program configured to use POP, then do not move the mail to the received folder, because your mail client will not be able to see this folder.)
  5. If you have marked any messages for deletion, Pine will now ask if you would like to expunge (really delete) these messages. Press y if you wish to delete them.
